Lanzarote is one of the 7 Canary
Islands situated off the West coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Also known
as the Fortunate Islands, due to their latitude (28°N), the Canaries enjoy all
year round sunshine. The islands were formed between 20 and 35 million years ago
by a series of underwater volcanic eruptions. The islands, west to east, are El
Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and
Lanzarote.
Lanzarote is the most easterly of the islands,
situated 125km to the west of the southern tip of Morocco, and 1000km South of
the Iberian peninsular.
This Island also enjoys the warmest and driest climate
in the Canaries, and unlike the black volcanic beaches of other Canary islands,
the beaches in Lanzarote are golden and sandy. This is especially true in Playa
Blanca on the south coast, its very name meaning "white beach".
So, what make Lanzarote the ideal holiday
destination? Despite its southerly latitude, Lanzarote is still only 3½ - 4
hours from most UK airports making it an ideal destination for a break of any
duration at any time of the year. Flights are inexpensive, and most UK airports
service the island.
What makes Lanzarote a better choice than
the popular resorts in Mediterranean, e.g. the Balearics, Greece, Turkey, etc? With
the year round sun, Lanzarote has the ideal climate for both summer and winter
breaks alike, enabling you to enjoy
the best of both worlds. Although obviously hot, in the summer Lanzarote is never stifling
and unbearable like the Mediterranean resorts can be, and at night it
cools to a comfortable sleeping temperature. It's a fresher, drier heat that doesn't tend
to drain your energy, as the atmosphere is nowhere near as humid as other popular
holiday destinations. In the winter
- well, what winter?
But don't some Spanish Islands have a
problem with unruly "brits-abroad"? Certainly not in Lanzarote. Although in the same group of
islands, Lanzarote is a world away from the noisier, rowdier resorts that can be
found in, say, Tenerife. It's true Puerto del Carmen, the largest resort in
Lanzarote, can be a bit "wild", but certainly down in Playa Blanca, things are more relaxed.
Lanzarote is certainly one of the more attractive islands, with
many attractions and beautiful inland villages to explore.
